Things to do while in Parker
River Island State Park
A few miles north of Parker, River Island State Park sits tucked between desert hills and the Colorado River. It’s smaller than some of the nearby river spots, which is part of what makes it great. There’s a sandy beach for swimming, a boat ramp, and a few quiet coves where you can drift in a kayak and forget what time it is. And the short trail behind the campground climbs just enough to give you that “wow” view of the river and red rocks below.
Buckskin Mountain State Park
Just south of Parker, Buckskin Mountain State Park is a great spot to spend a day on the Colorado River. Lots of visitors come for the views alone with the red cliffs, clear water, and desert hills making it one of the prettiest stretches along the river. You can also launch a kayak, cool off at the swimming beach, or hike one of the short trails that climb into the hills for an unbeatable lookout over the valley.

Tucked way far up in the Buckskin Mountains outside Parker, The Desert Bar (also known as Nellie E Saloon) is one of those places you kinda have to see to believe. It’s completely off the grid which means no power lines, no paved road, and no cell service for miles. You’ll drive a few miles down a dusty trail before you spot the solar panels, metal bar tops, and live music stage built into the hillside. It’s open seasonally, usually from October through April, and it’s as much about the journey as the destination. Bring cash, bring friends, and plan for an adventure.
